Why a nail technician stays essential in the age of AI
- Every nail is different: you have to look at it, feel it and adapt the set to the client's hand.
- Building a thin, strong apex on a curved nail is hand work, to a tenth of a millimetre.
- Refusing a set on a damaged nail takes a human eye and the client's trust.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You enjoy meticulous work.
- You have steady, patient hands.
- You love creating with colour.
- You enjoy working with clients.
- You are strict about hygiene.
Not sure yet? That's what the €6.90 guide is for. Refund within 14 days if it isn't you.

A typical day
- 9:00 am: open the station, switch on extraction, disinfect tools and lay out new files for the day.
- 9:30 am: first client, a quick chat about past reactions, then a full gel set on nail forms.
- 11:30 am: infill for a regular client, filing down the old gel and rebuilding the apex.
- 1:30 pm: politely refuse a set on a red, swollen nail, advise a doctor's visit and rebook.
- 2:30 pm: wedding nail art, a French with two decorated nails, photo taken with the client's consent.
- 5:00 pm: gentle removal of a gel set, no pulling, and aftercare advice for the natural nail.
- 6:30 pm: clean the station, update client records and send infill reminders.
How to become a nail technician
In France, applying nail enhancements without manicure requires no diploma: the government confirmed in May 2017 that it is not beauty care under the law of 5 July 1996. If you also do real manicures, a beauty qualification may apply, so check with your local Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA). To have your skills recognised, the French beauty branch awards a certificate in nail styling (CQP, RS7183, registered until 2030), open through adult training or a work-study contract. Since 2017 France's health agency Anses has recommended a harmonised qualifying course, so serious training in hygiene and products remains essential. In English-speaking countries, rules and licensing differ from place to place: check locally before you start. The G-Learn trial is a first step to discover the job; its certificate is not a diploma.
Pay
In French salons covered by the beauty and cosmetics collective agreement (IDCC 3032), minimum pay has been €1,877 gross per month at coefficient 160, €1,995 at coefficient 200 and €2,300 at coefficient 250 since 1 June 2026 (amendment no. 43 of 22 January 2026); the minimum wage applies below that. Self-employed, income depends on prices, time per set and client loyalty.
The hard parts
- The products are chemicals: the (meth)acrylates in gels and acrylics can cause allergies, sometimes for life, without proper protection.
- The work is seated and repetitive: wrists, neck and back tire quickly without a well-adjusted station.
- You must be able to say no to a client in a hurry, and keep up with changing rules, such as the EU ban on TPO in 2025.
