How to become a crochet bag maker
No qualification is required to make and sell crochet bags. People learn in a workshop, a club, from books or tutorials. In France, the official list of craft trades places this work in textiles, as a "maker of textile objects". To sell regularly in France you need a legal status: most choose the micro-business scheme, registering on the single business formalities portal, and the chamber of trades (CMA) or Urssaf advise for free. Many start alongside a job while they build a customer base. In English-speaking countries, the route is similar: learn through classes and practice, then register as self-employed before selling. The G-Learn trial lets you check in a week that the motion, the repetition and the selling suit you. The G-Learn certificate shows you completed the trial: it is not a qualification.
Pay
There is no standard salary: most crochet bag makers are self-employed. As a benchmark, Insee reports that in 2024 French micro-entrepreneurs earned an average of €680 a month from their business, and half earned less than €330; one in three also had a salaried job. Income depends on your price, your hours, platform fees (a 6.5% transaction fee on Etsy) and contributions (12.3% of sales on France's micro-business scheme in 2026).
The hard parts
- Time: a bag takes several hours, and a low price means working almost for free.
- The body: repeated movements tire wrists, fingers and shoulders; breaks are essential.
- Selling: photos, listings, messages and shipping take as much time as the crochet itself.
