Why a car mechanic stays essential in the age of AI
- A car is repaired hands-on: stripping a calliper, feeling play in a ball joint, torquing to spec.
- The scan tool suggests a lead, but someone has to measure, check and road-test the car to conclude.
- Handing a car back to its driver makes a human responsible for its brakes and steering.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You like knowing how things work.
- You are precise and methodical.
- Cars interest you.
- You don't mind getting your hands dirty.
- You enjoy explaining things to customers.
Not sure yet? That's what the €6.90 guide is for. Refund within 14 days if it isn't you.

A typical day
- 8 am: start of shift, reading the day's job cards and checking the parts that have arrived.
- 8.15 am: first car on the lift, a 60,000 km service following the manufacturer's schedule.
- 10 am: engine warning light on a small hatchback, fault codes read with the scan tool, then multimeter tests.
- Noon: calling a customer to approve new front brake pads and discs.
- 2 pm: fitting the brakes, torque wrench, bleeding and a road test.
- 4 pm: a hybrid in for servicing, tyres and cabin filter, without touching the high-voltage system.
- 5.30 pm: handing the car back, explaining the work, stamping the service record and tidying the bay.
How to become a car mechanic
In France, the usual route is the CAP Maintenance des véhicules (cars option), a two-year vocational diploma that adults with prior qualifications can often complete faster, usually as apprentices in a garage. The Bac pro and then the BTS in the same field lead on to diagnosis or workshop management. Sector training centres welcome adult career changers. Working on the high-voltage system of hybrids and EVs also requires electrical authorisation under standard NF C18-550, issued by the employer after a short course and renewed regularly. Braking and lifting tasks are always learnt under a mentor. In English-speaking countries, apprenticeships and college courses in motor vehicle maintenance play a similar role. The G-Learn trial is a first step to see whether workshop life suits you: its certificate is not a qualification.
Pay
Pay varies widely by region and status. In France, employed mechanics are usually covered by the motor trade services collective agreement (IDCC 1090), whose minimum rates depend on grade and are at least the national minimum wage. Pay rises with experience, specialisms (diagnosis, EVs, air conditioning) and responsibility, up to workshop lead. Some experienced mechanics later open their own garage, where income depends on the business's results rather than a fixed wage.
The hard parts
- A physical job: on your feet all day, under cars, handling heavy parts, dirty fluids and workshop noise.
- Safety responsibility: a mistake on brakes, steering or a badly tightened wheel can cause a crash.
- Training that never stops: electronics, hybrids, EVs and driver-assistance systems change methods every year.

Frequently asked questions
Can I become a car mechanic at 40?
Yes. Many adults train through apprenticeships or adult courses. Physical fitness and enjoying hands-on work matter more than age, and customer-facing experience is an asset at the service desk. A day of work shadowing in a local garage is a good way to check the pace before committing to training.
Do I need a qualification to be a car mechanic?
In practice, garages mostly hire people with a motor vehicle qualification, such as the French CAP, Bac pro or BTS. To touch the high voltage of a hybrid or EV, electrical authorisation issued by the employer is mandatory.
How is it different from an EV technician?
A car mechanic services and repairs all cars, combustion and hybrid alike. An EV technician specialises in high voltage and batteries, with more advanced authorisations. A car mechanic can later specialise in EVs through further training.
