How to become a sexologist
In France the title of sexologist is not protected, but nobody becomes a credible sexologist overnight. The serious route starts with a core health or mental health profession: doctor, psychologist, midwife, nurse or physiotherapist. You then take an inter-university diploma (DIU) in clinical sexology or sexual medicine, usually over three years, with roughly one day of classes every three weeks. Only a medical sexologist can diagnose and prescribe. As a career changer, count the time for your core profession, then the DIU. In English-speaking countries, sex therapy is usually also a postgraduate specialisation for health or counselling professionals. The G-Learn trial is a first step to see if this listening job suits you; its certificate is not a diploma.
Pay
Earnings vary widely by region and status. Most sexologists in France work privately, often alongside their first profession, and set their own fee for a consultation that is usually not reimbursed outside medical care. Many build their income gradually, combining sexology sessions, prevention workshops and training for health workers, so revenue depends as much on the network and reputation as on the number of slots offered.
The hard parts
- The emotional load: you hear stories of suffering and violence, which is why supervision matters.
- A client base grows slowly, especially at first, before you have a network of doctors.
- Because the title is not protected, you constantly have to prove your seriousness against poorly trained practitioners.

Frequently asked questions
Can I become a sexologist at 40?
Yes, if you already hold a care or mental health profession: the sexology DIU can be taken while working. Without that core profession you must first train in one, which makes the path much longer.
Do you need a degree to be a sexologist?
In France the title is not legally protected. But clients and doctors trust practitioners with a recognised health profession and a sexology DIU, and only a doctor can prescribe.
How much does a sexologist consultation cost?
Fees are set freely. A session often lasts about 45 minutes and is usually not reimbursed unless a doctor provides it as medical care; some top-up insurers contribute.
What is included in the sexologist course?
A 13-page PDF guide that covers the whole job, and a 3-level path of 13 five-minute lessons (beginner, intermediate, expert), each with a quick quiz, plus a certificate of completion per level.
Is the course available in English and French?
Yes. You choose English or French at checkout; the Complete Pack includes both languages.
How do I receive the course?
Tick the 18+ box, choose the English or French edition and pay by PayPal or card, without creating an account. Your download link appears on screen right after payment and is also emailed to your PayPal address.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. G-Learn certificates confirm you completed the course. They are not a state diploma or a licence to practise.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: if the course is not what you expected, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Prices start at €9.90.
