- Every move is adjusted on the spot to the patient's pain, fear and reactions.
- Knowing when to say "this isn't for me" and refer to a doctor is a human responsibility.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You enjoy working with people.
- You have a calm, precise touch.
- You want to understand how bodies move.
- You can say no when needed.
- You are ready to run your own practice.

A typical day
- 8:30 am: first patient, lower back pain that started while gardening; the case history takes fifteen minutes.
- 10 am: a 50-year-old woman has lost weight for no reason and has night pain; no treatment, a letter to her doctor.
- 11:15 am: an office worker with a stiff neck; exam, gentle techniques, three tips sent by text.
- 1 pm: break, records updated and online booking requests answered.
- 3 pm: a runner recovering from a race; you check there is no acute injury before treating.
- 6:30 pm: last patient, then the week's bookkeeping and cleaning the table and room.
How to become an osteopath
In France, the title of osteopath is protected. You need a diploma from one of 31 schools approved by the Ministry of Health, after 5 years and 4,860 hours of training, including 1,500 hours of clinic with real patients. The diploma is registered at level 7 and cannot be obtained through accreditation of prior experience (VAE). Doctors, physiotherapists, midwives and nurses can follow an adapted course of around 2,000 hours of teaching and 600 hours of clinic. Everyone must then register with the regional health agency (ARS). Rules differ from one English-speaking country to another, so check with your local regulator. As a career change it is a long, costly project: the G-Learn trial helps you check the job suits you first. The G-Learn certificate is not a diploma.
Pay
According to the Registre des Ostéopathes de France's demographic study published in January 2026, a French osteopath's average monthly income was €1,987 in 2024, down 10% over ten years. The gaps are huge: about €794 a month for the lowest-paid quarter, about €3,300 for the highest-paid quarter. A consultation costs €60 on average. Income depends mostly on location, competition and professional network.
The hard parts
- Competition is fierce in France: around 2,000 new graduates a year and very uneven income.
- Your body works all day: back, wrists and thumbs need protecting throughout your career.
- The profession is criticised over its evidence: you must stay honest, within your legal scope, and know when to say no.
