Why a door supervisor stays essential in the age of AI
- Reading a guest's state and attitude happens face to face, in seconds, in the noise.
- Refusing without humiliating or discriminating takes tact, a human voice and presence.
- When someone collapses, a fight breaks out or the room is evacuated, a responsible person must be there.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You stay calm when voices rise.
- You enjoy people and the night.
- You remember faces easily.
- You apply a rule without favouritism.
- You can say no politely.

How to become a door supervisor
In France, working security at a night venue requires the professional licence issued by the CNAPS, the national private security council. You first apply for prior authorisation, valid for 6 months, to enrol on training. The security and prevention officer course (APS, formerly CQP APS) lasts about 175 hours in theory and includes first aid. The licence is then valid for 5 years, with a refresher course before renewal. No school diploma is needed, but your criminal record is checked. In English-speaking countries, door work is also licensed, with rules that vary from one country to another. The G-Learn trial is a first step to find out whether nights, the door and its rules suit you; its certificate is neither a diploma nor a licence.
Pay
In France, an officer employed by a private security firm at grade 120 earns at least €1,883.85 gross a month in 2026 for a 35-hour week (collective agreement IDCC 1351, grid published by PayFit), before night, Sunday and bank holiday premiums. Pay varies widely by country, city and venue.
The hard parts
- Night and weekend work, with shifted sleep you must protect constantly.
- Drunk or aggressive guests to handle calmly, sometimes in rain or cold.
- Real legal responsibility: a badly founded refusal can be discrimination.
