Become a construction CAD designer: test-drive the career before you switch
From the architect's file to the construction drawing: reading, drafting, modelling in BIM and checking what the software produces before a site builds it.
- 13 five-minute lessons
- 3 levels
- 13-page PDF guide
- English & French
- Certificate of completion
How AI is changing the construction CAD designer
- BIM software already generates sections, schedules and quantities from the model, and detects clashes on its own.
- Understanding the project, choosing between options, checking the rules and standing behind the drawing stays human.
- The course teaches you to model, coordinate and check every tool output before it goes to site.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You like precision and exact dimensions.
- You are comfortable at a screen.
- You picture shapes in 3D easily.
- You like knowing how a building stands up.
- You check your work before sending it.
Not sure yet? That's what the €6.90 guide is for. Refund within 14 days if it isn't you.

A typical day
- 8.30 am: open the document system and read the architect's comments on the first-floor drawings.
- 9 am: model partitions and service openings in Revit, as requested by the building services engineers.
- 11 am: run a clash detection between the structural model and the ventilation model.
- 1.30 pm: sort the clash report and send the three real problems to the trades concerned.
- 3 pm: update a construction drawing, add a revision cloud and move it to revision C.
- 4.30 pm: take off concrete quantities for the bill and check them against a ratio.
- 5.30 pm: catch up with the site manager on a question from site.
How to become a construction CAD designer
In France, Onisep puts entry to the job at two years of higher education: BTS bâtiment, BTS travaux publics or a BUT in civil engineering. Adults changing career usually take one of two routes. The first is the titre professionnel of building design technician (technicien d'études du bâtiment en dessin de projet), awarded by the Ministry of Labour, covering planning drawings, technical design, construction drawings and quantities. The second is a two-year BTS bâtiment through work-study. People who have already drawn can apply for a VAE, a diploma based on experience. In English-speaking countries, technician courses and apprenticeships in architectural or construction drafting play a similar role. Whatever the route, learn AutoCAD then Revit and build a portfolio. The G-Learn test-drive is a first step to check the job suits you: the G-Learn certificate is not a diploma.
Pay
According to Onisep's French job sheet (viewed November 2026), a beginner construction CAD designer in France starts from €2,330 gross a month. Pay rises with experience, BIM skills and moves into BIM coordinator or project lead roles. Figures vary with the region, the employer and the status.
The hard parts
- Long hours sitting at a screen with constant concentration: one wrong dimension can be expensive on site.
- Deadlines are tight and drawings are often reworked: every design change means updating several documents.
- The job changes fast: software, BIM and AI tools keep evolving, and you need regular training to keep up.

Frequently asked questions
Will AI replace construction CAD designers?
It already replaces part of the repetitive drafting: BIM software generates views, schedules and quantities, and detects clashes. But someone still has to model accurately, choose, check the rules and stand behind the drawing that goes to site.
Can I become a CAD designer at 40?
Yes. In France, the building design titre professionnel and the work-study BTS both take adults. Site experience is a real asset for producing drawings that can actually be built.
How much does a construction CAD designer earn?
In France, Onisep gives a starting salary from €2,330 gross a month. It rises with experience and BIM skills, and varies with the region and the employer.
Do I need to be good at hand drawing to become a CAD designer?
Not in an artistic sense. What counts is rigour, a good sense of space and command of CAD software such as AutoCAD and Revit. A quick freehand sketch is still handy for talking things through with an architect or a site supervisor.
What is included in the construction CAD designer course?
A 13-page PDF guide that covers the whole job, and a 3-level path of 13 five-minute lessons (beginner, intermediate, expert), each with a quick quiz, plus a certificate of completion per level.
Is the course available in English and French?
Yes. You choose English or French at checkout; the Complete Pack includes both languages.
How do I receive the course?
Immediately after payment you receive a download link by email, with your invoice. The files are A4 PDFs you can read on any device or print.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. G-Learn certificates confirm you completed the course. They are not a state diploma or a licence to practise.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: if the course is not what you expected, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Prices start at €6.90.
