Why a construction account manager stays essential in the age of AI
- AI already reads big tender files and extracts quantities, but the signed price binds the firm and whoever decides it.
- Winning a client's trust or negotiating a discount or a variation happens face to face, not through software.
- Visiting a site, sensing a hidden risk and balancing client, site and margin remain human decisions.
Is it for you? Five signs
- You enjoy persuading and negotiating.
- You are at ease with figures.
- You know or love the building trade.
- You juggle several files at once.
- You stay calm under tight deadlines.

How to become a construction account manager
In France, a construction account manager usually holds two to five years of higher education in building: a BTS (two-year technical diploma) in building or construction economics, a professional degree, a civil engineering master's or a building engineering school. Apprenticeships are very common and let you earn while training. Career changers who do well tend to be site technicians or works managers adding sales skills, or builders' merchant salespeople adding solid technical knowledge, sometimes through validation of prior experience (VAE). In English-speaking countries, similar roles are often reached through construction management or quantity surveying courses and on-the-job progression. The G-Learn trial is a first step to see if the job suits you: its certificate is not a diploma and replaces no formal qualification.
Pay
According to the Michael Page salary survey (2027 edition, viewed in 2026), an account manager in a French general building and civil engineering contractor earns, in the Paris region, a gross fixed annual salary of about €37,000 at the low end, €46,000 on average and €62,000 at the high end, excluding bonuses. Pay is often lower in other regions. Many firms add a bonus linked to contract results, so earnings can vary from one year to the next. Bonus rules depend on each firm and are never guaranteed.
The hard parts
- Bid deadline pressure: a tender must go at the exact time, even when a supplier has not replied or a live site is causing trouble.
- Responsibility for the price: a pricing error or a badly negotiated discount costs money for the whole job, and you are the one accountable.
- A market under strain: with fewer homes started in France since 2022, price competition is fierce and you must know when to turn a job down.

Frequently asked questions
Can I become a construction account manager at 40?
Yes, it is common: the job values experience from site work, sales or management. A building technician or salesperson can move into it with extra training or recognition of prior experience. With no technical background at all, start with a building course first.
What is the difference between an account manager and a works manager?
The account manager wins the contract, prices and negotiates it, tracks its margin and stays the client's contact. The works manager organises and steers the execution of the site. The site supervisor leads the team on the ground.
Will AI replace construction account managers?
AI already helps to read tender files, extract quantities and draft method statements. But negotiating, visiting a site, choosing a price and committing the firm with a signature remain human responsibilities.
What is included in the construction account manager course?
A 13-page PDF guide that covers the whole job, and a 3-level path of 13 five-minute lessons (beginner, intermediate, expert), each with a quick quiz, plus a certificate of completion per level.
Is the course available in English and French?
Yes. You choose English or French at checkout; the Complete Pack includes both languages.
How do I receive the course?
Immediately after payment you receive a download link by email, with your invoice. The files are A4 PDFs you can read on any device or print.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. G-Learn certificates confirm you completed the course. They are not a state diploma or a licence to practise.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: if the course is not what you expected, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Prices start at €6.90.
