Human-essential

Why a CNC machinist stays essential in the age of AI

  1. CAM software and AI suggest toolpaths, but someone must choose the setup and approve the first part.
  2. A vibration, the sound of a cut, a drifting dimension: it takes an eye and an ear beside the machine.
  3. Machining is among the hardest jobs to recruit for in France: industry is short of skilled people.

Is it for you? Five signs

  • You like understanding how things are made.
  • You are precise and patient.
  • You enjoy numbers and measuring.
  • You like working with machines.
  • You take safety rules seriously.

How to become a CNC machinist

This guide is based on the French system. In France, the CAP in machining trades, a level 3 qualification, was created by an order of 20 May 2026, with a first exam session planned for 2028. It sits alongside production engineering vocational baccalaureates, Ministry of Labour professional titles (turner producing mechanical parts, computer-aided machining technician) and metalworking industry certificates (CQPM), such as the industrial turner certificate. Career changers often train with Afpa, a Greta or a UIMM training centre, through apprenticeship or funded by the CPF or Transitions Pro. Elsewhere, look for the equivalent machining apprenticeship or vocational qualification. The skill is learnt on machines, with a trainer. The G-Learn trial is a first step to check you enjoy the job; its certificate is not a qualification and does not authorise you to operate a machine tool.

Pay

In France, pay depends on the grade under the metalworking collective agreement (IDCC 3248). The amendment of 20 February 2026, in force from 11 March 2026, sets gross annual minimums from €22,710 (class 3) to €33,970 (class 10) for 35 hours; the actual job determines the class (source: scale published by fiche-paie.fr, to be checked on Légifrance).

Frequently asked questions

Can I become a CNC machinist at 40?

Yes. In France, Afpa, Greta and UIMM training centres take adult career changers for professional titles or CQPMs, often through apprenticeship, and industry is hiring strongly. A liking for precision and earlier hands-on or technical experience are real assets when you start out. Some firms also train newcomers in-house through industry certificates.

Do I need a qualification to be a CNC machinist?

A CAP, vocational bac, professional title or CQPM is strongly recommended: firms only trust machine tools to people trained on machines. This guide replaces none of them. Outside France, look for a recognised machining apprenticeship or vocational course with real workshop hours.

Will AI replace CNC machinists?

CAM software and tools such as CAM Assist already suggest toolpaths, but setup, adjustment, judging the cut and approving parts remain human work. Machinists who understand CAM and can check what software proposes are likely to be even more sought after.

What is included in the CNC machinist course?

A 13-page PDF guide that covers the whole job, and a 3-level path of 13 five-minute lessons (beginner, intermediate, expert), each with a quick quiz, plus a certificate of completion per level.

Is the course available in English and French?

Yes. You choose English or French at checkout; the Complete Pack includes both languages.

How do I receive the course?

Immediately after payment you receive a download link by email, with your invoice. The files are A4 PDFs you can read on any device or print.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. G-Learn certificates confirm you completed the course. They are not a state diploma or a licence to practise.

Can I get a refund?

Yes: if the course is not what you expected, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Prices start at €6.90.
