How to become a chartered accountant
In France, expert-comptable is a protected title: only holders of the diploma of chartered accountancy (DEC) registered with the Ordre des experts-comptables may use it. The path runs through the DCG (bac+3, 13 units), the DSCG (bac+5, 7 units), a 3-year traineeship with a chartered accountant, including at least 24 months in a firm, and finally the three DEC exams, one of them a dissertation. Allow at least eight years after the bac. Career changers can shorten the path through exemptions linked to earlier degrees, work-study or accreditation of prior experience (VAE, after 3 years in the field). In English-speaking countries, chartered accountancy is also a long qualification combining exams and supervised work. The G-Learn trial is a first step to see whether the job suits you: its certificate is not a diploma and does not replace any professional qualification.
Pay
Salaries vary widely by region and status. An assistant, a manager, a salaried chartered accountant and a partner earn very different amounts, which also depend on the size of the firm, the client portfolio handled and management responsibilities.
The hard parts
- A very long path: two diplomas, three years of traineeship and a dissertation, often eight years or more, with demanding exams to fit around a job.
- Workload peaks every year, from closing the accounts to filing tax returns, with long days from January to May and deadlines that cannot be moved.
- Heavy responsibility: your signature commits you, and sometimes you must say no to a client who asks you to massage the figures.

Frequently asked questions
Can you become a chartered accountant at 40?
Yes, there is no age limit. The path is long, but exemptions, work-study and accreditation of prior experience can shorten it depending on your background. Many start as an accounts assistant to test the job while studying for the qualifications.
Do you need a qualification to be a chartered accountant?
Yes. In France you need the DEC, obtained after the DCG, the DSCG and a 3-year traineeship, then registration with the Ordre des experts-comptables. Without it you can work as a bookkeeper or assistant, but you cannot use the title or keep other people's books on your own account.
Will AI replace chartered accountants?
It already automates part of the posting, reconciliations and invoice reading, and e-invoicing is speeding this up. Judgement, signing, responsibility and advising the business owner stay human. The job is shifting towards checking and advising.
What is included in the chartered accountant course?
A 13-page PDF guide that covers the whole job, and a 3-level path of 13 five-minute lessons (beginner, intermediate, expert), each with a quick quiz, plus a certificate of completion per level.
Is the course available in English and French?
Yes. You choose English or French at checkout; the Complete Pack includes both languages.
How do I receive the course?
Immediately after payment you receive a download link by email, with your invoice. The files are A4 PDFs you can read on any device or print.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. G-Learn certificates confirm you completed the course. They are not a state diploma or a licence to practise.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: if the course is not what you expected, ask within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Prices start at €6.90.
