How to become an adult toy designer
In France the job belongs to industrial design (ROME code H1204). The usual route is a DN MADE in object design, a three-year degree, sometimes followed by a DSAA or a product design school. Career changers can take continuing education in product design and CAD, and a first role designing appliances, cosmetics or healthcare products is a good stepping stone. Expect several years between training and a senior design role in this sector, where a portfolio and discretion matter a great deal. In English-speaking countries, product design degrees and studio experience are the usual way in. The G-Learn trial is a first step to see whether the job suits you; its certificate is not a qualification.
Pay
Salaries vary widely by region and employment status. An in-house brand designer, a studio designer and a freelancer earn very differently, depending also on experience and portfolio. There is no public pay scale specific to this sector: compare with product designer job offers where you live.
The hard parts
- The sector is small and the subject is still taboo for some friends, family and employers: you need to present your job calmly and professionally.
- Safety, materials and data rules are demanding: they shape the product itself and lengthen development time.
- Projects are long and confidential: you cannot always show your work, which makes building a portfolio harder.

Frequently asked questions
Can you become an adult toy designer at 40?
Yes, especially if you come from design, product engineering or product marketing. The hardest part is building a strong product design portfolio. Continuing education in CAD and object design helps a lot. Many designers in this sector first worked on other consumer products.
Do you need a degree to design adult toys?
No qualification is legally required, but brands hire trained product designers, often with a design degree. The portfolio remains the main criterion. Short courses in CAD, materials and product safety also make a difference when you apply.
Which standards apply to these products in Europe?
Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety has applied since 13 December 2024. ISO 3533:2021 sets requirements specific to these objects, and REACH, CE marking and the GDPR may apply depending on the product.
